Lotus State Breathwork
Lotus State Breathwork is a guided conscious connected breathing practice designed to support emotional wellbeing, nervous system regulation, and personal transformation. It combines evidence-informed breathing techniques with holistic practices to create a safe space for healing, self-discovery, and inner balance.
Breath is one of the few functions in the body that is both automatic and under conscious control. By intentionally changing the rhythm and depth of your breathing, you can directly influence your nervous system, emotional state, and level of awareness.
The Science Behind Breathwork
Your breath has a profound effect on the autonomic nervous system, which controls many of the body's automatic functions, including heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and stress responses.
During periods of chronic stress, many people become stuck in a sympathetic ("fight-or-flight") state, leaving the body feeling tense, anxious, overwhelmed, or emotionally disconnected.
Guided breathwork helps regulate this response by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the body's "rest, restore, and recover" system. As the nervous system becomes more balanced, many people experience:
Reduced stress and anxiety
Improved emotional regulation
Increased sense of calm and safety
Greater mental clarity
Improved sleep quality
Enhanced resilience to daily challenges
The Vagus Nerve
One of the key pathways involved in breathwork is the vagus nerve—the longest cranial nerve in the body and a major component of the parasympathetic nervous system.
The vagus nerve acts as a communication highway between the brain and many of the body's organs, including the heart, lungs, and digestive system.
Conscious breathing may help increase vagal activity (vagal tone), which is associated with:
Better emotional regulation
Improved heart rate variability (HRV)
Reduced stress response
Faster recovery after stressful events
Greater feelings of connection and safety
When the vagus nerve functions well, the body is better able to shift out of survival mode and into a state where healing, learning, and connection become more accessible.
Brain Waves & Altered States of Awareness
As breathing patterns change, many participants notice a shift in their state of consciousness.
Research suggests that deep breathing and meditative practices can influence brain wave activity, encouraging transitions from everyday beta waves (associated with focused thinking and problem-solving) toward slower alpha and theta brain waves.
These states are often linked with:
Deep relaxation
Increased creativity
Enhanced self-awareness
Access to emotions and memories
Improved insight and reflection
Many people describe feeling deeply present, emotionally open, or experiencing a sense of inner stillness during these states.
The Mind–Body Connection
Emotions are not experienced only in the mind—they are reflected throughout the body. Stress, grief, fear, and unresolved experiences can influence muscle tension, breathing patterns, posture, and overall wellbeing.
Lotus State Breathwork encourages awareness of these physical sensations while using the breath to support emotional processing and nervous system regulation.
Participants commonly report feeling:
Lighter
More grounded
More connected to themselves
More emotionally balanced
More present in everyday life
A Holistic Approach
At Lotus State, we view healing as an integration of mind, body, and spirit.
Alongside the physiological effects of breathwork, we honour the emotional, energetic, and personal aspects of each individual's experience. Sessions may include guided intention setting, mindfulness, somatic awareness, gentle movement, music, and integration practices to support the whole person.
We believe that every individual already possesses an innate capacity for healing. Breathwork does not "fix" you—it creates the conditions for your body and mind to reconnect with their natural ability to regulate, restore, and grow.
Every Experience is Unique
No two breathwork sessions are the same. Some people experience profound relaxation, while others encounter meaningful emotional insights, physical sensations, or a renewed sense of clarity and purpose.
Whatever arises, each session is guided with compassion, respect, and a trauma-informed approach, allowing you to explore your inner experience at your own pace.
